The Historic Preservation Act of 1966 established the National Register of Historic Places (U.S. National Park Service). This list of approved historical properties identifies and celebrates properties that meet standards of historical integrity and are at least fifty years old.
Many properties are listed in districts. A historic district is a residential or commercial area designated by a unifying historical significance-neighborhoods built in compatible styles and within certain time frames-and/or properties sharing a common use-a downtown commercial area or a university campus. The historical designation for districts is based on the exterior of the buildings. Every district contains contributing buildings and a smaller number of non-contributing buildings. (Contributing resources were built within the historic period and retain enough historic features to add to the significance of the district overall. Non-contributing resources are usually either built after the historic period or have had historic features substantially altered.)
